Mah Jongg as Metaphor

I like to think I’m an organized person. My children always give me a hard time when they see me straightening out my money. When I worked in a bank 25 years ago as a teller, it was part of our job to keep all the money facing the same direction. Now days you’re lucky to receive the bills back in denominational order!

One of my tricks in staying organized consists of making a list every day and trying to accomplish what’s on it. My life is very busy with having three children and working third shift at a large plant. I’ve found that I have very little time to do things that I enjoy. (Come to think of it, I don’t seem to remember what it is that I do enjoy!)

My kids are into every game imaginable. I decided one morning after taking my 10-year-old daughter to school that I would sit down at the computer and look for something to play that tickled my fancy. I happened upon the game of Mah Jongg. It takes very little thought and plays the most beautiful Asian music in the background. It is almost like a lullaby for me. After a hectic night at work and an even more hectic morning with the kids, I play this game until I go to bed. For me it is very relaxing.

My favorite part? I love clearing the screen. It makes me feel the same way I do when my list has check marks next to every item. Another way I can relate to this game is peeling back the many layers of my person. I feel the older I get the more I learn about my inner self. Each set of tiles that leaves the screen is another mystery solved or another task completed. My, my, if only life were this simple!
