While playing “House of Wonders: Kitty Kat Wedding,” a truly odd hidden object game about unemployed cats in love, I got to thinking about all the weird games I've played in the past few years. It's one of the amusing things about Indie developers – they're often willing to take a chance with a bizarre topic or premise. It certainly keeps things interesting for avid casual gamers!
One of my favorite weird ones is “Supple.” If you like soaps like Days or Y&R, you'll see why. It's a very good people simulation game, where you manage the relationships between a woman, her boss, and her coworker. Your character can be fired for doing strange things, like wearing lingerie to the office, but actually gets rewarded for seducing her coworker (as long as she doesn't get caught).
Then there's “Hot Dog King.” This is one of the strangest sim games. It's definitely geared for the guys, since the whole idea seems to be to hire barely-dressed women to serve food while customers make yucky eating noises. Well, at least my husband found it funny!
Another game that I found amusing was “My Exotic Farm.” Maybe it's because of my time in Africa, since this game reminds me so much of what it's like to do small subsistence farming. The premise is that you are on a tropical island, and you inherit a small farm and an ostrich...
One of the most original I've played in a long time has got to be “Rooms: The Main Building.” You wander around, solving sliding puzzles and trying to help your character escape out of various mixed up rooms. The atmosphere is very quirky, like something out of a movie. The only downside is that it's confusing to figure out what you should be doing.
What's my point? I don't have one. But, if you want to play something really different and quirky, you've got plenty of options in casual games. :)
